How it is calculated

Every figure has a rule.

Hourly wage
monthly × salaries per year ÷ (weekly hours × 52)
Temporary: wage supplement
hourly × 25 % × night hours per month (ArG 17b para. 1)
Regular: time compensation
night hours per month × 10 % as time off (ArG 17b para. 2)
Contract premium
CHF per night hour × night hours per month × 12

Frequently asked

What the law says about it.

Work between 23:00 and 06:00 (ArG Art. 10). Employers may shift the night period by one hour, for example to 22:00 to 05:00, if most of those affected agree. Hospitals and care homes operate through the night under a permit.

Up to 24 night assignments per calendar year it is temporary, and a 25 percent wage supplement is due. From 25 nights a year it is permanent or regularly recurring, and the 10 percent time compensation applies (ArG Art. 17b, ArGV 1 Art. 31). In everyday nursing, the time compensation is almost always the one that applies.

Often, yes. Most collective agreements and cantonal pay regulations in healthcare provide a premium in francs per night hour, in addition to the statutory time compensation. The amount is in the agreement or staff regulations; enter it above and the calculator shows the annual sum.

Temporary Sunday work carries a 50 percent wage supplement (ArG Art. 19 para. 3). Regular Sunday work has no statutory supplement but compensatory rest; most collective agreements pay a premium regardless.
